HE IS…Our Helper

I’m fine. I have it all under control, really!

(Except, I don’t. Not even a little bit.)

Life seems to get more difficult with each passing year. My needs stack on top of one another and it all feels like way too much.

The truth of the matter is that I need help. And you know what I’ve found? That’s a very good thing.

My need exalts God as Helper. My inability to hold things together shows that my God holds that job. In the Bible, I find a God who delights in helping his people.

I read a quote from Charles Spurgeon a few years ago that changed my heart and I’m slowly learning to believe and act on it—

“If thou hadst need of a thousand times as much help, I would give it thee; thou requirest little compared with what I am ready to give… If there were an ant at the door of thy granary asking for help, it would not ruin thee to give him a handful of thy wheat; and thou art nothing but a tiny insect at the door of my all-sufficiency. I will help thee.”

My needs are not only minuscule in comparison to the fullness and sufficiency of Christ, but the Bible says that God loves to help his people! “The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him” (2 Chronicles 16:9). He is actively seeking to help and care for you! And when he spots one of his children in need, Deuteronomy 33:26 says he rides on the clouds to come to your aid!

When we ask God for help, we admit that we are not God—that we cannot save or sustain ourselves. We need a rescuer, a helper, a provider, a SAVIOR! Our needs point to the only One who is strong and merciful enough to meet them. When we throw up our hands, admit our insufficiency and rest ourselves in our Helper, we preach the good news of a Savior who delights to help needy people (that’s us!)

What an upside-down kingdom! What a kind and generous God! We get help, he gets glory and joy. So today, remember it’s good to admit your need. Humble yourself, ask the Lord for help, worship him for being so kind and strong and lift your eyes to the hills….

“Where will my help come from?

My help comes from the Lord,

the Maker of heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2).
